Product Safety
Bumkins is committed to reducing or eliminating exposure to any toxic chemicals in our production processes and product lines.
Our waterproof fabrics are OEKO-TEX® certified, ensuring our materials are safe according to CPSC and FDA guidelines in the USA. We also test to conform to additional safety regulations worldwide, as requested by our distribution partners. As new safety guidelines arise, we will work internally to improve our testing protocols as new methods become available.
We perform safety testing regularly through third-party accredited labs to ensure we meet CPSC and FDA standards. These standards include but are not limited to Lead, Phthalates, BPA, BPS, Cadmium, Latex, and PVC. As new safety guidelines arise, we will work internally to test our products and ensure we stay on top of compliance across our territories.
In particular, PFAS (PFCs, PFAs, and PFOAs) regulations are relatively new and increasing in the US and across the globe. However, testing protocols do not yet cover all variations of these chemicals, nor are regulations or safe limits established. We do not intentionally add PFAS into our products. Still, we recognize that these chemicals are present in our water, air, dust, and environment. For that reason, minute amounts may register on tests. As we receive new information on these chemicals, Bumkins will improve our testing and manufacturing protocols to ensure our products are safe for our customers.
CALIFORNIA PROP 65
What is California Prop 65?
California Proposition 65 requires warning labels on consumer products that could possibly contain any of the more than 900 chemicals or ingredients that the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) considers harmful. The chemicals listed in California Prop 65 are those that are synthetic and human-made, or those that occur through natural process. Business are required to provide this information to consumers so Californians can make informed decisions about their exposure to the chemicals listed in Prop 65.
Since there is a chance that our products or packaging can be exposed to some of the chemicals mentioned in California Prop 65 through natural occurrence, we must include the following warning below on select products: “WARNING: This product can expose you to Perfluorochemicals (PFCs), which are known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or reproductive harm. (For more information go to www.p65warnings.ca.gov)”
Bumkins products that require this warning include those that are made of our signature waterproof fabric. Rest assured, we annually test our products to meet all required USA safety standards set forth in the CPSIA and FDA. This includes but is not limited to BPA, BPS, Cadmium, Lead, Phthalates, and PVC. In addition, we perform additional testing to meet or exceed safety standards of the international territories that we serve.
What substances and chemicals are included in California Prop 65?
California Prop 65 includes an extensive list of chemicals and substances, including those that are human-made or those that occur naturally. Please visit https://www.p65warnings.ca.gov/chemicals to see the full list.
Should I worry about California Prop 65?
We know that seeing this warning could be worrisome to our consumers, but we want to reassure you that all of our products are tested to meet all safety regulations as outlined in the CPSIA and those set forth by the FDA. This warning label is common and can be found on good sold in the state of California. Bumkins is constantly researching industry safety standards and will do our best to ensure our products remain compliant with safety regulations for the territories that we sell to.
